Published in hardback in 2013 and paperback a year later, Reporting at the Southern Borders: Journalism and Public Debates on Immigration in the US and the EU is a scholarly work on the role of news media in public debates on immigration for which I wrote a chapter. The book grew out of a seminar at the University of Minnesota in April 2012 to which I was invited along with several other journalists and academics.
My chapter tells the story of what until recently was the worst-ever disaster involving migrants in the Mediterranean and how, for years, most of the mainstream media refused to acknowledge what had happened.
